Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind: how we think, how we act and interact individually and in groups. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour, e.g. thoughts, feelings and motivations underlying such behaviour. We need psychology because many of the problems faced by the modern world are rooted in human behaviour, so psychological knowledge can help us to find solutions and create a better future.
Clinical psychology is that branch of psychology with the purpose of understanding, preventing and relieving psychological distress and to promote well-being and personal development. There is increasing recognition that mental health has an impact on physical health, and that psychological insight can help us in our personal and professional relationships and activities.
Central to my practice are psychological assessment and psychotherapy, although I also engage in research (I am particularly interested in the area of psychosis, recovery and severe mental health problems, psychotherapy and staff dynamics), management (I manage a recovery house for people with severe mental health problems) and offer consultation (staff teams or other groups, such as, care homes, schools, social workers, families).
I have extensive experience of working individually and with groups of clients, such as, children, teenagers, adults, couples, careers and use various methods which differ in regards to the context and nature of the problem presented by the client, for example, stress, depression, relationship problems and addictions.
Therefore psychological interventions will range from gaining greater understanding of the motivations underlying one’s thoughts and feelings (e.g. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy) to focusing on making changes in how one thinks and acts (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT).
Some clients choose to see me for reasons such as feelings of anxiety, stress, depression, anger or relationship problems. Others choose psychotherapy as a means to explore a desire to get to understand oneself better and develop as a happier human being. Others come as a result of physical problems, such as, weight problems, allergies, migraines among others.
